Finally! A high resolution reproduction of one of my favorite prints (courtesy of the MFA Boston)! Oh Totoya Hokkei, no one gives you any love these days. (If you’re wondering, the woman is feeding the dragon salt from the dish in her hand. It is speculated that the image references a Chinese poem, but as far as I know it has yet to be identified.)

    basically, you have three choices:
    jail, mall, museum

    whose hapless invariance
    repeats as edges leaping

+ museum = home sweet home

    so little is a stone.

Where there was something and suddenly isn’t,
an absence shouts, celebrates, leaves a space.
I begin again with the smallest numbers.

Quick dance, shuffle of losses and leaves,
only the things I didn’t do
    crackle after the blazing dies.

“Art altogether is nothing but a survival skill, we should never lose sight of this fact, it is, time and again, just an attempt — an attempt that seems touching even to our intellect — to cope with this world and its revolting aspects, which, as we know, is invariably possible only by resorting…
